Media has important role to play in raising awareness among voters: Shanmugam


Chief Electoral Officer holds state level media workshop in view of upcoming LS polls

Dehradun, 30 Jan: A State Level Media Workshop 2024 was organised at the Secretariat under the chairmanship of Chief Electoral Officer and senior IAS officer V Shanmugam here today.

Addressing the workshop, Chief Electoral Officer Shanmugam said that, during elections, media has a very important responsibility in raising voter awareness and ensuring higher voting percentage during the elections. He added that the media has also a role to play in making the public aware about the election process. The media has also been called the fourth pillar of democracy. He expressed hope that, as always, the media will play a constructive role in encouraging more people to vote in the upcoming Parliamentary polls. He asserted that it is the media that takes the responsibility of spreading the awareness work done.

Joint Director Nitin Upadhyay and Deputy Director Ravi Bijarania discussed with the journalists the role and responsibilities of media during elections, state and district level MCMC (Media Certification and Media Monitoring Committee), media certification, paid news, and sweep activities. A large number of media persons were present. The electoral officers and officials from the state information department gave some presentations also.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer Pratap Singh Shah, Joint Secretary Kushma Chauhan, Mukta Mishra, Deputy Director Information Manoj Srivastava and representatives of various media organisations were present at the workshop.
