DEHRADUN, 27 Apr: Uttarakhand’s Women Empowerment and Child Development Minister Rekha Arya on Monday launched a sharp attack on Opposition parties over the issue of women’s rights and reservation. She asserted that no one can now deprive women of their rightful share and that half the population will claim its rights on its own. She said the matter of women’s reservation has long been debated in the country but opposition parties have consistently created hurdles. She accused Congress and other parties, particularly the INDIA bloc, of lacking seriousness in politically empowering women.
Arya also alleged that whenever the question of representation for women in Parliament and Assemblies arises, these parties attempt to delay or obstruct the process through various excuses. She claimed that the BJP is fully committed to women’s empowerment and has resolved to provide one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. She expressed confidence that the measure will eventually be implemented and credited to the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The minister also referred to the proposed ‘Aakrosh Mashaal Rally’ in Dehradun on Tuesday (today), describing it as a symbol of rising anger among women and their awareness of rights. She said women today are more educated, conscious and politically active, no longer confined to being mere voters but emerging as participants in policymaking. Arya added that family dominance in parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal restricts opportunities for ordinary women, which she termed a historic mistake that could cost the opposition dearly in future elections.
