Perks of Being Actually Intelligent!

For nearly two centuries, education has been closely linked with employment. Parents advised children to acquire skills, universities designed courses to meet industry needs, and societies measured success by the ability to secure a stable job. During the Industrial Revolution, labour was the foundation of economic growth. The Information Age shifted the emphasis towards technical skills, especially coding and computer science. Today, however, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the rules once again.  For years, young people were told that ‘learning to code’ was the safest path to employment. Coding became the modern equivalent of literacy. Yet, as AI systems increasingly write software, generate reports, analyse data, and automate repetitive intellectual work, the labour market is undergoing a profound transformation. The distinction is no longer merely between skilled and unskilled workers. It is becoming a distinction between labour and talent. This change deserves careful attention because it influences not only career choices but also the very purpose of education.

Labour has always been the exchange of time and effort for a specific task. Whether physical or intellectual, labour is transactional. An organisation assigns a task; a worker completes it and receives compensation. Labour succeeds when the instructions are clear, and the outcome is predictable. Artificial Intelligence excels precisely in such environments. An AI system can write code, prepare legal drafts, analyse financial statements, translate languages, summarise research papers, generate marketing campaigns, and even assist doctors in diagnosis. Every month, these capabilities improve exponentially. This does not mean that humans will disappear from the workplace. Rather, it means that routine intellectual labour is becoming increasingly automated, just as routine physical labour was transformed by machines during the Industrial Revolution. The lesson is clear. If a person’s value lies solely in completing assigned tasks efficiently, then technology will inevitably compete with that person. Eventually, technology may perform the same task faster, cheaper, and more consistently.

The future therefore belongs less to labour and more to talent. Talent is fundamentally different from labour. Labour performs tasks. Talent creates value. Talent is not simply a collection of technical skills. It is the uniquely human capacity to understand situations that have never existed before. This is Actual Intelligence.

Actual Intelligence cannot be measured merely by examination scores or programming certificates. It includes qualities that develop through life experience, reflection, culture, ethics and human interaction. These qualities include: Judgement when there is no clear answer. Ethical reasoning under pressure. The ability to build trust across different cultures and communities. Creativity in uncertain situations. Emotional understanding. Leadership during crises. The wisdom to balance competing interests. Curiosity to ask meaningful questions and the courage to challenge accepted assumptions. These abilities do not replace Artificial Intelligence. They guide it. An AI system may recommend ten possible solutions. Actual Intelligence decides which one should be chosen—and whether the problem itself deserves solving. That distinction changes everything. Many discussions portray AI as a competitor. A better understanding is that AI is becoming an extraordinary tool. Throughout history, every powerful technology multiplied human capability. The plough multiplied physical strength. The printing press multiplied knowledge. Electricity multiplied productivity. The internet multiplied communication. Artificial Intelligence multiplies information processing. But none of these technologies replaced human purposes. Likewise, AI does not eliminate the need for intelligence; it increases the need for higher forms of intelligence. As AI performs more routine thinking, humans must contribute to more original thinking. The competitive advantage therefore shifts upward—from execution to judgement. Schools have traditionally rewarded correct answers. The future may reward better questions. Artificial Intelligence can answer millions of questions every second. But it cannot independently determine which questions truly matter for humanity. Every breakthrough begins not with an answer but with an insightful question. Why are students disengaged? How can healthcare become more compassionate? What kind of cities encourage happier lives? How should technology respect human dignity? What responsibilities accompany scientific discovery? These questions require philosophical thinking before technological solutions. The future belongs not merely to people who solve problems efficiently but to those who identify the problems worth solving. That is Actual Intelligence. Many universities are beginning to recognise that philosophy may become one of the most valuable companions to technology. At first glance this seems surprising. Philosophy studies ethics, logic, reasoning, meaning and human nature. Computer science studies algorithms, computation and automation. Together they create a powerful combination. Computer science teaches how to build intelligent systems. Philosophy teaches why they should be built, whether they should be built, and what consequences they may have for society. As AI becomes embedded in healthcare, education, finance, law and governance, these questions become increasingly important. Who should an autonomous vehicle protect during an unavoidable accident? Should an AI be allowed to influence democratic decisions? These are not programming questions. They are philosophical questions. Technology increasingly requires ethical guidance.

For decades, many believed that humanities, history, and the arts offered fewer employment opportunities than technical disciplines. That assumption deserves reconsideration. History teaches societies how civilisations rise and decline. Literature develops empathy by allowing readers to experience different lives. Art strengthens creativity and imagination. Psychology deepens understanding of human behaviour. Political science explains institutions and governance. Philosophy cultivates logic and ethical reasoning. Communication develops persuasion and relationship-building. Ironically, these are precisely the abilities that become more valuable as AI automates technical routines. The future workplace increasingly rewards people who can connect ideas across disciplines rather than remain confined within one. Employers are discovering that technical expertise alone rarely creates exceptional leadership. Human-centred judgement does. Ideas have little influence unless they can be communicated effectively. Artificial Intelligence can generate reports. Humans inspire movements. AI can produce presentations. Humans persuade the audience. AI can summarise information. Humans build trust. Trust remains one of the most valuable economic assets. Teams succeed because people believe in one another. Businesses flourish because customers trust them. Nations prosper because institutions inspire confidence. Trust cannot simply be programmed. It must be earned through integrity, empathy, and consistent human behaviour. Communication therefore becomes not merely a soft skill but a strategic capability.

The greatest mistake young people can make is trying to outperform AI at tasks AI is specifically designed to perform. Instead, they should become experts at what AI cannot genuinely experience. They should cultivate: Character before credentials. Wisdom before information. Creativity before routine. Collaboration before the competition. Ethics before efficiency. Curiosity before certainty. Adaptability before specialisation.

Artificial Intelligence can become an extraordinary partner when guided by Actual Intelligence. The future professional will not reject AI. Nor will they depend entirely upon it. They will collaborate with it. AI will analyse. Humans will decide. AI will calculate. Humans will care. AI will recommend. Humans will accept responsibility.

Perhaps the greatest transformation lies ahead for education itself. If schools continue producing graduates trained only to perform routine tasks, many of those tasks will eventually be automated. Education must therefore shift from teaching only what to think towards teaching how to think. Students should learn to reason. To debate respectfully. To evaluate evidence. To recognise misinformation. To understand cultures different from their own. To appreciate history. To reflect upon ethics. To communicate with clarity. To work collaboratively. To remain lifelong learners. Technical knowledge will continue to matter. But technical knowledge without judgement may prove increasingly insufficient.

Success in the age of Artificial Intelligence will not belong exclusively to programmers, nor exclusively to philosophers. It will belong to individuals capable of integrating knowledge across disciplines while retaining deeply human qualities. The most successful professionals may be engineers who understand ethics, doctors who appreciate psychology, entrepreneurs who study history, teachers who embrace technology, artists who understand data, and philosophers who collaborate with computer scientists. The future rewards synthesis rather than specialisation alone. The distinction between labour and talent reminds us of an important truth. Labour completes assigned work. Talent imagines work that has never before existed. Labour follows instructions. Talent defines direction. Artificial Intelligence is becoming remarkably powerful at performing labour. Actual Intelligence remains uniquely powerful at exercising judgement, wisdom, imagination and moral responsibility. The challenge before today’s youth is therefore not to fear AI, nor to worship it. It is to cultivate the qualities that technology cannot automate: integrity, compassion, creativity, ethical courage, cultural understanding, and the ability to ask profound questions. In the coming decades, the greatest competitive advantage will not be possessing more information than machines. Machines will always possess more data. The true advantage will lie in being more deeply human.

For it is humanity’s Actual Intelligence—not merely Artificial Intelligence—that will continue to define civilisation, shape institutions, guide innovation, and determine whether technology becomes a force for human flourishing, for greater efficiency or God forbid Earth’s destruction! In an age increasingly powered by intelligent machines, the world’s greatest need will not simply be better algorithms, but wiser human beings.
