Letter to The Editor
Sir,
Watching a popular news channel just the other night reminded me of an Arts and Crafts Display in a school, where the TV anchor was the Chief Guest and our soldiers were the school children, all standing around their projects like statues. One child is selected to speak for each project, and he parrots his lines expressionlessly. Here, too, one soldier was explaining about each weapon rattling out what he had been told to speak, while the others stood or lay down in assorted positions with their weapons.
Will someone please tell our news channels that the skirmish/ war is over (thankfully). Stop milking it and move on. I’m sure there are many newsworthy things happening in India and abroad, which need to be highlighted.
Why must you announce every little thing about our soldiers and their weapons on national television? Is it really required? I know in today’s technology-driven world, there are ways of finding out about a country’s military might, but must you hand over everything on a platter?
The strength and trajectory of the mortars and missiles and what have you, flew over my head, literally, as they must have done over millions of others who were watching this particular programme.
So how about letting our men in uniform do their jobs without distracting them and tom-tomming about it all over town.
Pipe down, please.
Ratna Manucha
Yours etc.,
