DEHRADUN, 19 Sep: BJP MLA from Vikasnagar Munna Singh Chauhan on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress party over former Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s proposed roadshow and show of strength on his return to Uttarakhand. Chauhan demanded that Congress must clarify whether the event is meant to display power before the high command, send a message to State leaders or prove Rawat’s political relevance.
Chauhan observed that Rawat has long been sidelined within Congress, with his close associates denied expected positions and his supporters not given importance in the organisation. Chauhan said the forthcoming show of strength only highlights the internal tussle and discomfort within the party leadership. He questioned why Rawat speaks of stepping away from organisational responsibilities if he enjoys full respect in the party, and asked whether the roadshow is intended to remind the leadership that he remains Congress’s biggest face in Uttarakhand.
Chauhan added that while Rawat prepares to demonstrate his support base, the ED action against premises linked to his former PA and OSD has become a matter of public discussion. He reminded that the agency has reported recovery of cash, gold and expensive watches during its probe into alleged irregularities in the 2016 UKSSSC Gram Panchayat Development Officer examination. He said that the Congress must clarify its position on these issues alongside the show of strength.
He asserted that roadshows and crowds would not resolve political questions or end factionalism within Congress. If the event is meant as a message to the high command, then the party must explain why such a message is necessary. If it is merely a welcome programme, then why is it being presented as a show of strength. Chauhan concluded that the people of Uttarakhand want clarity, not internal politics, and Congress must decide whether Rawat is its guiding force, its tallest leader or a sidelined figure. He said tomorrow’s roadshow will itself provide an answer to that question.
