Dehradun, 1 Jul: The Haridwar Police continued its search and recovery operation for vehicles that had been swept away while they were parked in Sookhi Nadi adjacent to the Kharkhari Crematorium on Saturday. The search operation continued today for the third day and two vehicles that had sunk in the Ganga were pulled out of the river today. In a joint operation by the police, water police and NHAI team, two vehicles, both bearing Dehradun registration numbers were pulled out with the help of a crane from Ganga River near Dam Kothi.

While five vehicles that had sunk in the Ganga were pulled out by Saturday evening itself, the day of the incident, the rest could not be pulled out because Ganga was in full spate due to rains. After a gap of one day, the rescue mission was resumed today and two vehicles were pulled out.  A total of 8 vehicles were swept away, out of which seven vehicles have been recovered so far while one vehicle still remains missing. The Ganga meanwhile continues to be in spate amid intermittent rains in Haridwar, making it difficult and challenging to continue the search.

It may be recalled that several vehicles were swept away in Ganga following sudden rise in water level and the flooding of Sookhi Nadi adjacent to Ganga on Saturday. Many pilgrims and visitors regularly park their vehicles in Sookhi Nadi area as it usually remains dry. The vehicle owners had said that they had come to Haridwar’s Kharkhari Crematorium for the last rites of some relatives and had parked their vehicles in the Sookhi Nadi near the ghat but this area was suddenly flooded with water and their vehicles were swept away.
