Dehradun, 20 May: Chairing a meeting of the District-level Road Safety Committee here, today, District Magistrate Savin Bansal stressed on the district administration’s commitment to ensuring road safety. Keeping this in view, Bansal directed relocation of six liquor shops that are reportedly obstructing traffic.

It may be recalled that at a Road Safety Committee meeting on 27 March, the Senior Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police (Traffic) had mentioned that some liquor shops are a key factor behind rising road accidents and congestion. Responding to their proposal, Bansal has now approved the shifting of liquor vends located at Sun Park Inn Chowk, Chuna Bhatta, Bindal Tiraha, and Rozgar Tiraha. Citing public safety concerns and traffic disruptions, the DM has directed that these shops be relocated within a week.

It may be reminded here that through a recent order, the state government has empowered District Magistrates to decide on liquor shop locations in cases of public protests, law and order concerns, or local objections. Taking a firm stand on public safety, Bansal reiterated that no compromise would be made in ensuring smooth traffic movement. The district administration claims commitment towards enforcing measures aimed at eliminating obstacles to safe mobility, with the Supreme Court-backed Road Safety Committee making stringent decisions in public interest.

As part of ongoing safety initiatives, 23 electrical poles disrupting traffic flow are also being relocated across the city. Efforts to create left-turn-free zones, shift shops at 16 locations, relocate police booths at 10 spots, improve the Jakhan communication cut, and construct six culvert service lanes/slipways are progressing rapidly. The DM is personally overseeing these road safety projects to ensure timely execution.
