Sanskrit signage sought on National Highways, railway stations in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, 7 Jul: Deepak Kumar, Secretary, Sanskrit Education, Government of Uttarakhand, met several Secretaries and Additional Secretaries of the Government of India to promote and strengthen Sanskrit, the second official language of Uttarakhand.

On Monday, Deepak Kumar met V Umashankar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, and requested that signboards on all National Highways passing through Uttarakhand also be displayed in Sanskrit.

He subsequently met Satish Kumar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board, who also serves as Secretary, Ministry of Railways. During the meeting, he requested that signboards at all railway stations in Uttarakhand, as well as nameplates outside officials’ offices and other official signage, also be displayed in Sanskrit. He further urged that appropriate directions be issued to the authorities concerned for the implementation of this initiative.

Later, he met Puneet Kansal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and expressed his appreciation for the inclusion of Sanskrit on the name of Dehradun Airport and on the nameplates and designations of officials there. He requested that similar arrangements be extended to Pantnagar Airport and other airports and heliports across Uttarakhand.

During the meeting, the Secretary also requested that helicopter services operated under the Regional Connectivity Scheme be shifted from Jolly Grant to the Sahastradhara Helipad, stating that this would provide greater convenience to passengers.

Keeping in view the Kumbh Mela scheduled to be held in Uttarakhand next year, the Secretaries of the Ministries of Railways and Road Transport & Highways were also requested to begin the Sanskrit signage initiative from Haridwar and Rishikesh.

Prior to these meetings, the Secretary, Sanskrit Education, presented to the Secretaries of the three Union Ministries the relevant official communications issued by the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand in support of the proposals.
