Dehradun, 26 Sep: Sardar Bhagwan Singh University, in collaboration with Taqgene Training & Research Institute, successfully hosted a two-day workshop on “Fungal Food Production: Blueprint for an SDG-Driven Food System”. The event united more than 50 graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, faculty, and industry experts to explore fungal foods as a sustainable solution to global food security challenges.

The workshop opened with a ceremonial lamp-lighting and a welcome address by Dr Nidhi S Belwal, Convenor, who emphasised the role of fungal foods in fostering sustainable food systems aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “Let’s explore, learn, and cultivate a greener tomorrow together,” she urged.

Dr Sachin Chauhan, Director of Taqgene, delivered a compelling keynote on the nutritional, environmental, and economic benefits of mushroom production, highlighting its potential for entrepreneurship. Prashant Chaudhary, Senior Scientist, shared expertise on spawn production and plant tissue culture, followed by hands-on training led by Sushil and Tanuja. Participants engaged in practical sessions on media preparation, inoculation, sterilisation, and disease-free mushroom culture production.

A standout feature was a visit to Taqgene’s campus, where attendees explored advanced fungal food production facilities, including a modern mushroom unit and molecular lab. They gained insights into equipment like pulverisers and dryers and advanced biotechnological research techniques.

Coordinated by Dr Deepanshu Rana, Dr Supriya Vaish, and Dr Deepa Devi Verma, the workshop concluded with optimism about the role of fungi in sustainable innovation. Notable attendees included Dr Deepak Sahni (Registrar), Prof Veerma Ram (Director of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology), and Prof (Dr) Atul Kaushik (Associate Director, Research and Innovations).

The event underscored Sardar Bhagwan Singh University and Taqgene’s commitment to advancing research in fungal biotechnology, paving the way for a sustainable future and nurturing skilled professionals in healthcare and life sciences.
