Rishikesh, 23 Jun: A tragic road accident claimed the life of Shivpuri chowki in‑charge Sub Inspector Vinod Sharma, sending a wave of grief through the police department and leaving his family and colleagues in deep sorrow. The incident occurred in the Muni ki Reti police station area on the Rishikesh–Badrinath highway when Sharma, returning from night duty in his private vehicle, lost control after reportedly dozing off and his Scorpio plunged into a deep gorge. Sub‑Inspector Yogesh Pandey of Muni ki Reti police station lodged the complaint about the accident, and investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause.

The local police, SDRF and rescue teams rushed to the spot, descended into the gorge and retrieved Sharma, who was taken to hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead. The accident was discovered only after some delay, and the news spread quickly, casting a pall of gloom across the force. His body was later sent for post‑mortem at AIIMS. Following the post mortem, his mortal remains were brought to his ancestral home in Ghamandpur, Ranipokhari. Grief engulfed the family the moment his body arrived. His parents, wife, and children remain inconsolable.

Sharma, a resident of Ranipokhri, had earlier served in the Army before joining the police. He had also been in charge of the Dhalwala and Kailash Gate chowkis in the past and was widely respected for his courteous manner and dedication to duty. His sudden demise has been described by senior police officers as an irreparable loss to the department. His family, already connected to the police through his brother’s service, is devastated, while people from his native area have expressed profound grief. His brother also serves with Uttarakhand Police.

The Police officials and colleagues paid tribute to Sharma, recalling his commitment and popularity within the force. The department has appealed to the public not to speculate and has assured that all necessary inquiries will be conducted. Across the region, the atmosphere remains sombre as condolences pour in for the bereaved family.
