Dehradun, 17 Jan: The weather took a turn in Uttarakhand this afternoon with snowfall recorded in high altitude areas of Uttarakhand including Badrinath, Valley of Flowers, Hemkund, Auli, Rudranath and Hanuman Chatti.
Light snowfall was also witnessed in Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri Dham along with nearby Kharshali village, Jankichatti, Narayan Puri and Phoolchatti.
However, in the plains and lower hills of the state, there is still no sign of rain but extreme cold conditions prevail. In view of a very strong possibility of dense fog in district Udham Singh Nagar as had been predicted by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), schools there have been ordered closed from 18 to 20 January.
Cold wave prevails in the plains of the state. According to meteorologists, there is no chance of rain for the next three-four days. According to the forecast issued by the Meteorological Centre, an alert has been issued for fog in the plains.
Director of the Meteorological Centre, Bikram Singh said that, due to lack of winter rain, dry cold is troubling.
