Nainital, 30 May: The Uttarakhand High Court now has ten judges following the swearing-in of Subhash Upadhyay as an additional judge here today. Chief Justice G Narendar administered the oath of office and secrecy to him in a ceremony held in the Chief Justice’s courtroom.
The event began with Registrar General Kahkasha Khan reading out the notification of Upadhyay’s appointment issued by the President. Following this, Upadhyay formally took the oath as an additional judge.
It may be recalled that the Uttarakhand High Court collegium had recommended Upadhyay’s elevation as a High Court judge in September 2022. The Supreme Court collegium reiterated this recommendation on 12 April 2023. After a two-year wait, he has finally been appointed as a judge.
Upadhyay has previously served in various capacities at the High Court, including as Chief Standing Counsel. He completed his education in Lucknow. The advocates practicing in Uttarakhand High Court have welcomed his appointment.
Several dignitaries attended the oath-taking ceremony, including Justice Vivek Bharti Sharma, Advocate General SN Babulkar, Chief Standing Counsel Chandrashekhar Rawat, Government Advocate Amit Bhatt, High Court Bar Association President Durga Singh Mehta, and senior advocates Avtar Singh Rawat, VBS Negi, Dr Mahendra Pal, BD Upadhyay, KP Upadhyay, TA Khan, Pushpa Bhatt, Pushpa Joshi, Janki Surya, DCS Rawat, BD Kandpal.
Also present were retired Justice Sarvesh Gupta, Principal Secretary, Law, Pradeep Pant, Principal Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs, K Dhananjay Chaturvedi, Legal Advisor to the Governor, SALSA Joint Member Secretary Pradeep Mani, District Judge, Nainital, Subir Kumar, IG, Kumaon, Ridhim Agarwal, SSP, Nainital, Prahlad Narayan Meena, Additional District Magistrate Vivek Rai, along with a large number of advocates, judicial officers, and High Court staff. Upadhyay’s wife, son, and other family members were also present on the occasion.
