Tourism Department cancels registration of 257 Homestays in Almora

Almora, 5 Dec: In a major action by the Almora District Tourism Department, registration of 257 out of a total of 478 homestays has been cancelled. According to the Tourism Department, the registration of these homestays has been cancelled due to the use of registered homestays for commercial purposes and their failure to renew registrations. The department has issued notices to the operators of all the homestays the registration of which has been cancelled.

It may be reminded here that approximately 425 homestays were initially registered in Almora district and inspected by the Tourism Department. Of these, 257 homestays were not operating according to the rules mandated for the homestays. While homestays are intended for residential use with some parts being used commercially, with shops operating there. Notably, most of these homestays had also not renewed their registration with the Tourism Department.

Earlier, 478 homestays were registered with the Tourism Department, and an inspection revealed that 12 homestays were being used for commercial purposes by opening shops. Additionally, the registration of 245 homestays was not renewed with the department, leading to their cancellation for non-compliance.

The operators of the homestays concerned have been directed to either conform to the norms by registering as hotels or resorts or face legal action. Almora District Tourism Officer Prakash Singh Khatri stated that the inspection revealed many homestays were operating outside the ambit of the rules. All the homestay operators concerned have been given a fixed time-period to rectify the deficiencies and re-apply for registration under the correct category. A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed for non-compliance within the stipulated time limit, with an additional Rs 1,000 added to the fine each day from the date of imposition until payment. Non-compliant properties may also face closure, it was warned by the district tourism department.
