Dehradun, 5 Aug: The death of a tractor driver allegedly engaged in illegal mining in Pachhwa Doon has once again exposed the fact that despite all the claims of the government that illegal mining has been curbed to a great extent, it is thriving in the area. A tractor driver lost his life during an alleged illegal mining operation in Selakui, triggering protests by his family members and the local residents, who placed the body on the road and demanded strict action against those responsible along with adequate compensation for the bereaved family.
The incident occurred in Bhauwala under the Selakui police station in Dehradun district. Following the fatal accident, angry family members and the local residents staged a demonstration, alleging negligence and demanding a fair investigation, action against those responsible and financial assistance for the deceased’s dependants.
According to available information, the deceased, Rupan Singh, a resident of Samastipur district in Bihar, was driving a tractor-trolley when the incident took place. It is alleged that a forest protection team spotted the vehicle engaged in illegal mining activities and began pursuing it. During the chase, Rupan Singh reportedly came under the wheels of the tractor-trolley, resulting in his death on the spot.
As news of the tragedy spread, the deceased’s relatives and a large number of local residents gathered near the Bhauwala Bridge. They placed the body on the road and raised slogans against the administration, demanding an impartial inquiry into the incident. The protesters also called for stringent action against those found responsible and sought adequate financial assistance and compensation for the deceased’s family.
On receiving information about the protest, the police and the senior administrative officials rushed to the spot and attempted to pacify the demonstrators. The officials assured the protesters that the incident would be investigated impartially and that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law. The protest was continuing as efforts were being made to resolve the matter through dialogue.
