Dehradun, 23 Apr: Congress in Uttarakhand staged a dharna outside the Assembly premises today demanding 33 per cent reservation for women. This dharna has however evoked strong reactions from the BJP leaders, who launched a scathing counter-attack against the Congress Dhana. Haridwar MP Trivendra Singh Rawat has ridiculed the Congress protest, claiming that the dharna by the Congress is a case of ‘Thief scolding the Police’. He was reacting to the dharna staged by the Congress on the issue of women reservation. Rawat accused the Opposition of hypocrisy on the issue of women’s reservation.
Rawat reminded that, when the Bill was tabled in Parliament, the Opposition led by the Congress began protesting even before reading it, demanding revisions and thereby exposing its mindset towards women. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the opposition to cooperate in passing the Bill, but Congress and its allies refused to do so and thereby denied half the population of a rightful role in policy-making and governance. Rawat asserted that Congress has not only wronged women but has also harmed the future of India.
The clash between Congress and BJP over women’s reservation is becoming a major issue in Uttarakhand’s political discourse, with both parties seeking to mobilise public sentiment particularly in view of the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections.
