Dehradun, 26 Nov: The controversy surrounding a mosque in Uttarkashi, a border district of Uttarakhand, continues to escalate. Yesterday, members of Devbhoomi Vichar Manch submitted a memorandum to the Uttarkashi District Magistrate, demanding the removal of the under-construction mosque.  Several Hindu organisations have united and announced a Mahapanchayat on 1 December at Ramlila Maidan, Uttarkashi, under the banner of Devbhoomi Vichar Manch.

The members claims that the primary objective of the Mahapanchayat is to seek the removal of the under-construction religious site and to declare the Panchkosi Yatra area in Uttarkashi as a Hindu religious zone.

Ajay Nagar, Provincial Organisation Secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, shared that a Mahapanchayat will be organised on 1 December, bringing together all Hindu organisations. The event is being coordinated through the Devbhoomi Vichar Manch.

He also shared that, yesterday, representatives of various Hindu organisations had submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate, calling for strict action against illegal religious sites. Nagar alleged that there is a deliberate conspiracy to alter the demography of Uttarkashi, which he claimed poses a threat to the identity of the border district.

Nagar stressed that the Mahapanchayat aims to raise awareness across the state and also shared that permission to hold the Mahapanchyat has been applied for before the district administration. However, he also asserted that the Mahapanchayat would proceed even if official approval is not granted. He assured that the event would be conducted in a disciplined manner to inform people about the issues at hand.

It may also be recalled that, at the same time, a petition regarding the security of a mosque in Uttarkashi has been filed in the Uttarakhand High Court by the members of the other religious community. The court will hear the matter tomorrow. A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal had directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Uttarkashi, to maintain law and order at all religious sites in the district. The Director General of Police has also been instructed to submit a report on the situation by tomorrow. As tensions rise in the region, all eyes are on the upcoming Mahapanchayat and the court’s decision, which will likely influence the future course of action in this matter.
