Dehradun, 10 Apr: The hard work of the HOD of Ear-Nose-Throat Department at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dr Tripti Mamgain paid off when she conducted successful Cochlear Implant Surgery via the ‘Veria’ technique on a 31 year old female patient. After the surgery, the woman is able to hear in a better manner and is leading a normal life. There are so many cases of successful Cochlear Implant surgeries registered in the state but for the very time, an adult has been operated on successfully for Cochlear Implant in Uttarakhand. For this outstanding achievement, the Chairman of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has congratulated the hospital’s ENT Department and its HOD.
Thirty-one year old Amrita, a resident of Dehradun, had met with an accident which resulted in deficiency in hearing and eventually she lost all her hearing capability. Before the accident, she was able to hear in a normal manner. In medical science, this type of a case is referred to as ‘Post Lingual Deafness’.
In the surgery, which lasted for one and a half hours, the Cochlear Implant of the woman was done. After the surgery, as much as 98% of the hearing capacity of the woman has come back. The surgery was conducted by the ‘Veria’ technique, which is an advanced method of Cochlear Implant. Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital is the only hospital of Uttarakhand in which this technique is being used. The woman was provided financial aid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. She has expressed thanks to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami as well as the doctors and staff of Mahant Hospital. “At Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, more than 150 successful Cochlear Implant surgeries of children have been conducted till today. In the case of adults, this was the very first case of Cochlear Implant surgery. Cochlear Implant is a boon for those adults who previously had a normal hearing capacity but due to some accident or any medical reason, they have lost the capacity. In such cases, if desirable results are not obtained by the use of hearing aids, then Cochlear Implant is the only option left. At Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, the facility is available under ADIP Scheme, ESIC and ECHS,” disclosed Dr Tripti Mamgain.
