Narendra Nagar (Tehri), 21 Apr: A tragic road accident occurred near Kaudiyala in Tehri Garhwal district this morning when a car carrying eight passengers collided with a stationary truck loaded with iron rods. The incident took place around 8:05 a.m., following which one SDRF team from Vyasi outpost rushed to the spot with rescue equipment. On reaching the site, the team found that the car had rammed into the heavy truck, leaving the passengers trapped inside.
Among those travelling in the vehicle were five women and three men. One of the women, identified as Dhuma Devi, wife of late Dilwar Singh, aged about 55 years, died on the spot. Her body was badly stuck inside the mangled vehicle and had to be cut out with the help of specialised equipment after considerable effort by the SDRF personnel. The body was later handed over to the civil police for further proceedings. The remaining seven passengers sustained minor injuries and were immediately shifted to hospital by ambulance.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident reported late last evening, a man fell into a deep gorge on the Sirga motor road beyond Jakhola in Uttarkashi district. SDRF Post Mori received the information from Mori police station and a rescue team led by Head Constable Satyendra Singh was dispatched with necessary equipment. On reaching the site, the team learnt that the man had slipped and fallen nearly 250 metres into the gorge, resulting in his instant death.
Despite the difficult terrain, the SDRF team carried out a strenuous rescue operation and managed to retrieve the body from the gorge and bring it up to the road head. The deceased was identified as Khem Chand, aged 41 years, a resident of Himachal Pradesh. His body was handed over to the district police for necessary formalities. Both incidents underline the continuing challenges of road safety and treacherous terrain in the hill districts, where rescue teams often have to battle adverse conditions to save lives and recover victims.
