Pithoragarh, 25 Oct: Fresh tremors were felt in Uttarakhand this afternoon after an earthquake struck Pithoragarh district, triggering concern among residents. According to available information, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Pithoragarh itself. No loss of life or property has been reported so far. Significantly, the tremors come just four days after a powerful earthquake in neighbouring Tibet caused widespread devastation and heightened anxiety across the Himalayan region.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 on the Richter scale struck Pithoragarh at 12:51:44 pm this afternoon. As soon as the tremors were felt, many people came out of their homes as a precaution. The earthquake’s epicentre was recorded in the Moonakot area of Pithoragarh district at a depth of 11 kilometres. However, no reports of any damage have been received till now. The State Disaster Management Department and district authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Though generally, tremors of 3.7 on Richter scale are not considered a major cause of concern, but the latest tremor has drawn attention because of the devastating earthquake that struck Tibet on 22 October. It may be recalled that a 7.0-magnitude earthquake had caused extensive destruction in several parts of the region. Reports indicated that many buildings developed cracks, while several houses were reduced to rubble due to the intensity of the quake.
The powerful earthquake in Tibet had reportedly claimed 16 lives and left 32 people injured. The incident had raised concerns across the Himalayan belt, including Uttarakhand, which falls in a seismically sensitive zone. Against this backdrop, today’s earthquake in Pithoragarh, though moderate in intensity, caused anxiety among residents who have been closely following developments in the region.
