Workshop on ‘One Nation, One Code’ held at Graphic Era
By OUR STAFF REPORTER
Dehradun, 3 Feb: Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh said today that the Uniform Civil Code safeguards the personal rights of individuals. He urged the students to raise awareness about UCC in public.
SSP Ajai Singh was addressing students at the Graphic Era Silver Jubilee Convention Centre, here, today. During this workshop on the ‘One Nation, One Code’, he said that, over time, society witnesses many trends. Taking these changes into consideration, UCC has been implemented in the state. It does not discriminate on the basis of gender, religion or community and ensures equal personal and legal rights for individuals coming under its ambit. Uttarakhand is the first state to implement the UCC.
While clearing the doubts of students regarding UCC, he said that it applies primarily to marriage, divorce, succession and live-in-relationships. It will not infringe on anyone’s privacy. It does not promote live-in but will help in regulating the practice. Referring to a recent incident in Dehradun involving a student’s demise, he said that the student had been in a live-in-relationship for several months leading to complexities after her demise. If a registration system was available at that time, legal complications could have been avoided by various parties. Under this law, a registration system has been introduced to protect the rights of live-in-partners. SSP Singh expressed his gratitude to Chairman, Graphic Era Group of Institutions, Dr Kamal Ghanshala for organising the workshop on UCC for students.
Joint Director, Prosecution Department, GC Pancholi emphasised on the need for clear understanding of UCC among youngsters. Special Public Prosecutors Pankaj Raj and Mamta Manaduli shared information on the intricacies of the law. Chairman Dr Kamal Ghanshala presented a memento to SSP Singh.
Vice Chancellor of Graphic Era Deemed University Dr Narinder Singh, Assistant Prosecution Officer Bhanu Pratap Bisht, faculty members and students of various departments were present at the workshop.
