Dehradun, 11 Jun: A man named Salim has been arrested by Vasant Vihar Police for allegedly pushing his wife to take her own life. The police registered a case against him under section 108 BNS (abetment to suicide).
The case began when Mumtaz, the mother of the deceased woman Farah, filed a complaint at the police station. She said her daughter was being harassed for dowry after marriage. Farah’s husband Salim didn’t give her money and treated her badly. On 18 September 2024, Farah died after consuming poison. Her in-laws buried her without a postmortem, which made the family suspicious.
On Wednesday, police arrested the Salim. During questioning, he said he was under debt and had gone to Saudi Arabia for work. His wife wanted him to return, but he refused. They often fought on phone calls. On the day of the incident, Farah had brought home pesticide. When she said she would consume it, Salim angrily replied, “Go ahead.” He didn’t think she would actually do it, but she did—and died.
The police registered a case on 23 September 2024 under sections 103(1) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Later, under the order of the District Magistrate, Farah’s body was taken out from the grave. It was examined by a team of doctors. The postmortem and science reports showed no clear signs of murder. So, the earlier charges were dropped, and a new case under section 108 BNS (abetment to suicide) was added.
