The premiere was graced by acclaimed Bollywood actors Sanjay MishraDeepraj RanaBrijendra Kala, along with the film’s director, producer & actor Kunal Shamshere Malla, and co-stars Maliha Malla and Rishabh Khanna. Also present at the premiere were Anuradha Pundeer Malla, the co-writer of the film, Mohit Srivastava, the associate producer, Arvind Alok, associate director and Tobin Thomas, the director of photography. The dignitaries watched the film with a packed auditorium, filled with fans, artists, and film lovers from across the city.
Speaking at the event, Kunal Shamshere Malla said, “Making 5th September in Uttarakhand, with its breathtaking landscapes and incredible local talent, has been a deeply emotional and fulfilling journey. We wanted to make a film that felt real — one that reflects the joys, the heartbreaks, and the silent strength of school life, especially the bond between teachers and students. That we’re hosting this red carpet premiere right here in Dehradun, where the story is set and where I grew up, makes it all the more special. The response we’ve received from international festivals has been overwhelming, but today is personal — it’s for the people of this land. I hope this film not only entertains but also touches hearts and sparks conversations about the role of education and human connection in shaping our lives.”
Sanjay Mishra, who plays a pivotal role in the film, shared his thoughts and said, “It’s always a joy to be part of a film that has so much heart. 5th September is sincere, rooted, and truly refreshing. It reminded me of the beautiful simplicity and strength found in student-teacher relationships, something we often overlook in today’s fast-paced world.”
Produced by KSM Film Productions, 5th September is set in a school in the Doon Valley and explores the bonds between teachers and students during their final year. It’s a story about friendship, pressure, resilience, and hope — all unfolding around the symbolic setting of a football match. The film has already received over 40 awards and 20 nominations at international film festivals and features original music, including two Garhwali songs — a first for any mainstream Bollywood production.
Speaking on the occasion, Deepraj Rana added, “This film is a beautiful tribute to teachers and to growing up. I’m proud to be associated with it and to see it premiere in the land it belongs to. Shooting in Uttarakhand with a passionate team brought back so many memories and added depth to every scene.”
Brijendra Kala, who hails from Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand, shared his views and said, “It feels wonderful to be back in my home state for a film that’s been made with so much sincerity. 5th September is deeply connected to this land and its people — and that’s what makes it special.”
The premiere evening was filled with applause, emotional moments, and standing ovations, reflecting the strong connection the film has already begun to build with its audience.
