Dehradun, 10 Dec: This is the story of Asha Das, a remarkable woman from Raipur block’s Renu Self-Help Group under the Divyajyoti CLF. Her journey from extreme poverty to becoming a successful entrepreneur showcases the transformative power of resilience and targeted interventions.

Asha lived with her parents and depended on her father’s earnings. After his demise, the sole responsibility of the household fell on her shoulders. As the family’s only child and with her mother physically challenged, Asha faced severe financial hardships.

Employment options in her area were scarce, leaving her with little hope for stability. Recognising her potential, the Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project (REAP) under Uttarakhand Gramya Vikas Samiti enrolled her in the Ultra-Poor Package, a programme designed to help individuals overcome poverty through sustainable businesses.

Asha received Rs 35,000 to invest in a business of her choice.

Asha used the grant to establish a sewing business. With REAP’s training and guidance, she learned essential tailoring skills and purchased sewing machines to set up her shop.

She now stitches ladies’ suits, blouses, dresses, and more.

Asha earns around Rs 500 daily, translating to an average of Rs 15,000 per month, providing financial stability for her family. Her determination and success have inspired other women in her self-help group to pursue entrepreneurial goals.

Asha Das’s story is a testament to the transformative power of opportunity and support. From a life of despair, she has emerged as a symbol of hope, proving that determination and targeted assistance can change lives. REAP’s commitment to uplifting ultra-poor families continues to create inspiring models of empowerment and development in rural India.
