Dehradun, 26 Jul: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) laid a wreath and paid homage to the fallen soldiers, acknowledging their supreme sacrifice for the nation in a solemn wreath laying ceremony organised by Uttarakhand Sub Area at Cheedbagh, Shaurya Sthal, here, to commemorate the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. The ceremony honoured the valor and sacrifices of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War and laid down their lives in service to the nation.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 July to mark the historic victory of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the 1999 Kargil War (Operation Vijay) and to pay homage to the Bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The nation acknowledges the steadfast resolve and unparalleled courage of its soldiers.
The ceremony was attended by Major General MPS Gill, General Officer Commanding, Uttarakhand Sub Area, Commodore J Gurumani, Joint Chief Hydrographer, NHO Dehradun, GP Capt Nitin Negi, 1AFSB, Brigadier RS Thapa, Station Commander, Garhi Cantonment, Dehradun, with other ex-servicemen from the three Services at Dehradun Station.
The day’s events commenced with a ceremonial march from Jaswant Ground to Shaurya Sthal, Cheedbagh, comprising veterans, serving Armed Forces personnel, NCC cadets and students from six schools. The disciplined march culminated in the solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Shaurya Sthal, symbolising the nation’s enduring gratitude to the Bravehearts of the Kargil War.
The Governor also addressed the gathering, bringing out the importance of remembering the bravery and dedication of the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. He also emphasised that the nation and the armed forces always stand with the Veer Naris, ESMs and their dependants. He also underlined the importance of Kargil Vijay Diwas, honouring the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the brave soldiers who defended the integrity of the nation. Their unwavering spirit and supreme dedication will forever inspire. He urged everyone to draw inspiration from their heroic deeds and to strive for the honour and security of the nation.
On the occasion, the Governor also felicitated eight Veer Naris and three Gallantry Awardees in recognition of their immense contribution and sacrifice. He also presented Governor’s Certificates of Appreciation to twelve outstanding performers for their exemplary achievements and distinguished service.
The event marking 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas concluded with a resolve by all attendees to emulate the courage and dedication of the Kargil heroes and to uphold the values and honour of the nation.
All stations of Uttarakhand Sub Area and Indian Army Formations in Uttarakhand also celebrated the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas across multiple stations in the state.
