Mussoorie, 18 Jun: The state government has taken another ambitious step towards establishing Uttarakhand as a year-round tourism hub. Following the special efforts of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the much-awaited ‘Himalayan Car Rally’ is set to make a comeback in the state. The government believes that this rally will not only give a new identity to winter tourism but also generate fresh employment and self-employment opportunities in the hilly regions. In a recent high-level review meeting, Chief Minister Dhami directed Tourism Department officials to expedite preparations for the event. He emphasised the need to promote adventure tourism to showcase Uttarakhand’s natural beauty, snow-capped mountain ranges, and rugged terrains on an international stage.
Until now, tourism activities in Uttarakhand have largely been confined to the summer months and the Char Dham Yatra season; however, the government aims to boost tourist footfall during the winter months as well. The Himalayan Car Rally is considered a crucial component of this strategy. Traversing snowy paths, high mountain passes, and routes rich in natural beauty, the rally is expected to attract adventure sports enthusiasts from across the country and abroad.
The government anticipates that the rally will directly benefit sectors such as hotels, homestays, taxi services, restaurants, local handicrafts, and other tourism-related businesses. This initiative will create new avenues for employment and self-employment for the youth in the hill regions. Areas that typically witness lower tourism activity during winter are expected to derive particular benefit from this event.
The responsibility for the successful conduct of the rally has been assigned to the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN) and the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). Both organisations have begun finalising arrangements regarding route selection, security measures, participant accommodation, and other logistical details. Tourism experts believe that the Himalayan Car Rally is not merely a sporting event but has the potential to become a major vehicle for branding Uttarakhand. Through this rally, the state’s remote and naturally rich regions will gain recognition at both national and international levels. It will also provide a boost to adventure tourism, eco-tourism, and rural tourism.
Chief Minister Dhami’s initiative is being viewed as a significant step towards transforming Uttarakhand into a ‘Winter Tourism Hub.’ A successful Himalayan Car Rally would infuse new energy into the state’s tourism industry and play a pivotal role in establishing Uttarakhand as a premier destination for exciting tourism activities.
