Dehradun, 25 Aug: A long‑closed Common Facility Centre sewing unit at Sahaspur is being revived with modern machines at the initiative of the Dehradun District Administration. Preparations for its inauguration are in the final stage, and responsibility for its operation has been entrusted to women’s self‑help groups, opening new avenues of employment and self‑reliance for rural women.
The unit, established in 2024 near the District Industries Centre, has now been handed over to the Aastha Collector Level Federation of Sahaspur block. Equipped with 25 to 30 advanced sewing machines, the centre will provide training, production opportunities and market linkages. Women will manufacture jute bags, school uniforms, car covers and bike seat covers, with efforts underway to secure bulk orders from private companies and industrial hubs such as Selaqui.
The officials emphasised that the initiative will not only utilise modern machines effectively but also strengthen women economically, supporting the state’s vision of creating ‘Lakhpati Didis’. Chief Development Officer Abhinav Shah said that the centre will help women establish self‑employment ventures, while Project Manager REAP Sonam Gupta observed that many women in Sahaspur are already skilled in tailoring and will now benefit from regular work and improved income. The administration believes this step will play a vital role in empowering rural women and boosting the local economy.
