Bazpur (US Nagar), 16 Jul: In a major vigilance action, the Haldwani vigilance team arrested Naib Nazir Om Chauhan, posted at the Civil Court (Junior Division) Bajpur, while he was caught red‑handed accepting a bribe of Rs 3,500 from a complainant in the name of court fees. According to the vigilance inquiry, the bribe was demanded during the compromise proceedings of a case under the Negotiable Instruments Act, where Chauhan sought money from one of the parties under the pretext of court charges. The vigilance team has now begun detailed interrogation and further investigation against the accused, along with legal proceedings.
The complainant had approached the Vigilance Establishment Sector, Haldwani, stating that a case under the NI Act was pending against him in the Bajpur Civil Court. After reaching a compromise with the opposite party, he went to file the settlement in court, where Chauhan allegedly demanded Rs 3,500 as bribe in the name of court fees. The complainant, unwilling to pay, decided to expose the corrupt official. On finding the complaint prima facie correct, the SP Vigilance Establishment Sector, Haldwani, immediately constituted a trap team under the leadership of an inspector. Acting as per procedure, the vigilance team laid the trap today and arrested Chauhan, son of Virendra Singh, resident of Nivadmundi, Jaspur, Udham Singh Nagar, while he was accepting the bribe inside the office of the Civil Judge, Junior Division, Bajpur.
The vigilance department has confirmed that further investigation is underway and legal action will follow.
