Pithoragarh, 19 Dec: The operation of the Government Medical College, Pithoragarh, will commence in the academic session of 2026-27 under the Medical Education Department. Preparations at the departmental level are in full swing. The construction of the main building of the medical college, along with other works, is approximately 45% complete, and the remaining tasks are to be completed soon, as directed by the departmental and executing agency officials.
During his visit to the Kumaon region, State Minister, Health and Medical Education, Dr Dhan Singh Rawat, reached Pithoragarh and conducted an on-site inspection of the Government Medical College. He reviewed the progress of the administrative building and other construction works with the departmental and agency officials. Dr Rawat informed the media that the state government is building the medical college at a cost of Rs 750 crore, with more than 45% of the construction completed. He instructed the officials to complete the remaining work within the next six months.
He further mentioned that the government has set the goal of officially inaugurating the college in 2026. Preparations at the departmental level are in full progress. Additionally, the process for appointing faculty and medical staff for various departments of the college has already begun. Officials have also been instructed to apply to the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2025 for the operation of the medical college. Dr Rawat also revealed that the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has granted permission to transfer 1.06 hectares of forest land adjacent to the college to the government.
After inspecting the medical college, Dr Rawat held a joint meeting with officials from the Education and Health Departments at the district headquarters auditorium. During the meeting, he directed the officials to ensure better healthcare services at the district hospital and all medical centres in the district. He also instructed the Education Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of dilapidated schools and submit it to the government promptly. Dr Rawat reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening and making the health and education systems more accessible. He urged officials to remain vigilant and dedicated to their work, ensuring that the expectations of the people are met.
The meeting was attended by District Magistrate Govind Giri Goswami, Principal of the Government Medical College Dr Ajay Arya, Chief Development Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, and other departmental officials.
