Dehradun, 14 Jul: Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Rekha Arya held a review meeting with officials of the Sports Department at her camp office in Yamuna Colony, here, today. Various issues related to the Sports Department were discussed including the celebration of upcoming Sports Day on 29 August.

The Minister said that on the occasion of Sports Day, the Chief Minister would launch a ‘Mukhyamantri Udyam Udyan Yojana’ for children between the age group of 8 and 14 years. Scholarships would also be awarded to children in the age group of 8 to 14 years.

Rekha Arya directed the officials to prepare proposals on opportunities that could be provided to children selected for various sports events so that their talent could be groomed adequately.  She also directed the officials to see from where the Sports Development Fund could be secured so that the sportspersons could get facilities to train and groom their talent. She said that she would speak to the CM soon in this context.

Arya reminded that a four percent horizontal reservation given to the players existed in the past and was known as the sports quota but it was not applicable at present due to a restriction on it by the Court. She asked the officers to review how this quota could be revived again.

Rekha Arya said that the entire cabinet had agreed on providing 300 days employment to PRD jawans, and asked the department officials to ensure that it is implemented effectively. The Sports & Youth Welfare Minister said there are about 9 thousand PRD jawans in all, of which about 5 thousand are employed at present. Instructions have been given to the officers to prepare a plan on how the rest of the PWD Jawans could be accommodated in various departments.

Special Principal Secretary, Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Abhinav Kumar, Director Sports and Youth Welfare Dr GS Rawat, Joint Director, Youth Welfare, Ajay Kumar Agrawal, and Joint Director Dharmendra Bhatt were present at the review meeting.
