Rains bring respite in Uttarakhand from heat wave

DEHRADUN, 1 June: Putting the brakes on the severe heat wave conditions, the rains on Saturday evening brought down the temperatures considerably in Uttarakhand giving much needed respite to the people in Dehradun and in other parts of the hill state.
Rains which began in the evening lashed several parts of the hill state even as the heat wave conditions persisted in the day time with Dehradun recording a temperature of 42.1 degree C with minimum temperature 24.4. By 2100 hours, the temperature in Dehradun had come down to 26 degree C, which was a considerable drop.
On Friday, Dehradun recorded the hottest day of May with temperature rising to 43.2 degree C which broke the previous record of 43.1 degree C observed on May 30, 2012.
The met department said rains and thundershowers are likely to occur for a few more days in parts of Uttarakhand.
Experts said rains would also halt the spread of forest fires in the state. The forest fire incidents have increased during the past few days.
Earlier in the day, rains continued to lash parts of the hill state with Mussoorie recording a max temperature of 24.6 and Almora in Kumaon region observing 33.1 degree C.
