Uttarakhand’s Dr Brijmohan Sharma bags Asia’s Social Innovator Award

DEHRADUN, 17 Dec: Uttarakhand’s Dr Brijmohan Sharma has made the state proud by bagging Asia’s Social Innovator Award 2020/2021. Dr Sharma is Secretary of Dehradun based Society Of Pollution and Environmental Conservation Scientists. The Award is a big honour in a long list of Dr Sharma’s achievements as it carries the prestige of Asia’s No 1 brand and excellence award. He is probably the first person from Uttarakhand to get this achievement and has been given this award taking into consideration the fact that he has touched over 50 lakh lives through his interventions across the remotest parts of the country. His chief contribution has been in the field of Science communication, STEM learning tools for children, entrepreneurship, environment conservation and energy efficiency. The long citation that will be presented to Dr Sharma during the award presentation ceremony to be held later refers to his journey of the ‘Water Testing Campaign’ starting from the year 1990. It also mentions about his ‘Food Adulteration Testing’ that started in 1996 to create awareness as well as to stop food adulteration. Dr. Sharma also has a passion for popularizing science through field-based interventions among the various sections of society including children. Sharma’s list of honours include Uttarakhand state energy conservation award, which he bagged consecutively for three years -2009, 2010 and 2018. He also has to his credit Uttarakhand State Innovation award by Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology-2010 and 2011, Uttarakhand State Environmental Conservation award-2004 an Award on Hydroponics by Uttarakhand Horticulture Department in 2000, TOI Icon Award in 2019, UN Appreciation and Alumni Fund Award of US Embassy 2016. Significantly as part of his commitment towards environment conservation in the year 2020-21, under his leadership, villagers of Doiwala Block in Dehradun planted 2.10 lakh fruit trees in their fields. Even during COVID-19 lockdown, employment was generated for 68 marginalized women through stitching 62 thousand face masks. These masks were distributed for corona warriors. In addition, 325 PPE Kits; 5000 reusable and 4600 single use masks along-with a cheque for Rs. 1 lac was donated to CM Uttarakhand. Other than this Homemade sanitizers, Herbal handwash and Low-cost water filters were innovated during the lock down. A Huncha App for children activities centre was also developed. With Malaysia as its headquarters, ASIA Awards are presented in association with RULA Awards with World Chamber as online media partners.
