Dehradun, 13 Aug: Vibhajan Vibhishika Diwas (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) will be observed across Uttarakhand at the state and district levels under the directions of the Government of India on 14 August. The commemoration aims to create awareness among citizens about the tragic memories and realities of the Partition, while paying tribute to the struggles and sacrifices of millions affected. The objective is to acquaint the younger generation with the trauma of Partition, to honour the memories of those who suffered, and to preserve their legacy with dignity.
Director General of Information (DG Information) Banshidhar Tiwari informed that a state‑level programme will be organised in Dehradun in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, where the families affected by Partition will also be invited. A two‑minute silence will be observed in memory of those who had lost their lives during the tragedy. The programme will also feature the official screening of a documentary on the history, cultural heritage and contribution of the Matua community, along with a special exhibition related to Partition Horrors.
Tiwari said that in all the districts, digital exhibitions prepared by the Ministry of Culture to depict the pain and struggles of families affected by Partition will be downloaded from the government portal and displayed. The schools, colleges and universities will also organise debates, speeches, quizzes, lectures and discussions, while students will be encouraged to participate in the national online quiz hosted on the designated portal.
Secretary of Culture Yugal Kishore Pant has issued directions to all the heads of departments, commissioners and district magistrates regarding the organisation of the events. He stated that participation of freedom fighters’ families, academicians, public representatives and other distinguished citizens will be ensured. The families affected by Partition will be given the opportunity to share their experiences and memories, and commemorative tokens will be distributed to them. Candle marches and tribute ceremonies will also be held to mark the solemn occasion.
