Woman alleges Triple Talaq and dowry harassment, probe launched

Roorkee, 16 Jul: A Muslim woman living in Piran Kaliyar has accused her husband of giving her Triple Talaq and also of subjecting her to dowry harassment. In her complaint to the police, she has alleged dowry harassment, physical assault and verbal abuse also. Acting on her written statement, the police have registered a case against the husband under relevant sections and have reportedly begun investigation.

The woman, a resident of a village under Piran Kaliyar police station, stated that she was married in 2015 to a man from a village in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh. At the time of marriage, her family had given gold and silver jewellery, household items and a motorcycle to her husband as dowry. She alleged that soon after marriage her husband began pressuring her for a car and subjected her to mental and physical harassment. She further claimed that whenever she resisted, she was beaten and abused, and further alleged that her husband developed relations with another woman and even married her. On opposing this, she was divorced by him through triple talaq and thrown out of the house. The woman said she had earlier approached the women’s helpline but no action was taken, after which she submitted her complaint at Piran Kaliyar police station seeking justice.

Based on her complaint, the police have registered a case against the husband and have reportedly launched an investigation. Inspector Kamal Mohan Bhandari, in charge of Piran Kaliyar police station, confirmed that further legal action will follow after inquiry.
