DEHRADUN, 29 Jan: Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress President Karan Mahara on Wednesday expressed deep condolences to the families of the devotees who died in the stampede at the Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj late Tuesday night (pre-dawn hours of Wednesday). He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Mahara blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for the accident, citing mismanagement and the administration’s focus on the movement of special persons instead of common devotees as the primary reasons for the tragedy. He criticised the government for not learning from previous accidents at similar events and accused it of promoting itself in the name of religion.
Mahara claimed that the government should have made adequate arrangements for transportation and crowd management, knowing that millions of devotees would participate in the Maha Kumbh. He stated that the state government and administration’s failure to ensure security led to the untimely deaths of many people, which is very sad.
