Development of sports culture priority for Govt: Dhami


CM flags off U’khand athletes for 37th National Games

Dehradun, 22 Oct: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off the team of athletes that will represent Uttarakhand at the upcoming 37th National Games in Goa from his official residence, here, today.

The Chief Minister extended his best wishes to the athletes and presented them with sports kits and track suits.

He congratulated the athletes, stating that they would bring glory to Uttarakhand with their performances. He mentioned that this year has seen an increase in the number of sports disciplines and athletes. The state is witnessing continuous development in its sports culture, and the government is making every effort to promote it.

The Chief Minister added that the government is providing sports scholarships to talented and emerging athletes with the aim of boosting talent in the state. The “New Sports Policy” has been introduced to encourage athletes at the grassroots level. Under the “Chief Minister’s Athlete Incentive Plan”, athletes aged 14 to 23 years will receive a scholarship of Rs 2000 per month and Rs. 10,000 per year for purchasing sports kits. The “Chief Minister Emerging Athlete Development Plan” offers a monthly sports scholarship of Rs 1500 to athletes aged 8 to 14 years. Additionally, the “Chief Minister’s Sports Development Fund” has been set up to provide immediate financial benefits to athletes as per the rules.

Dhami added that all athletes should determine their goals with resolve and work hard to achieve them. The state government would stand with them at every step.

Sports Minister Rekha Arya extended her best wishes to all the athletes. She mentioned that people’s perspective towards sports has evolved with changing times, and Uttarakhand is also progressing in the field of sports. The state government is providing sports scholarships to encourage athletes.

Special Principal Secretary Abhinav Kumar mentioned that, this year, the state is being represented by a 240-member team in the National Games, consisting of 177 athletes and 63 team officials. This team will participate in 25 sports disciplines. He wished the athletes good luck for the upcoming games.

During the event, President of the Uttarakhand Olympic Association, Nirmal Mukherjee, Secretary Dr DK Singh, Director, Sports, Jitendra Kumar Sonkar, Dr Alaknanda Ashok, and other dignitaries were also present.
