Dehradun, 14 Jul: World-renowned contributor to neonatology, Dr AK Deorari has taken charge as Principal of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences.
He was formally welcomed by Dr Vijay Dhasmana, VC, Swami Rama Himalayan University, who wished him a successful tenure.
Dr Deorari has attained the distinction of being one of the foremost contributors to facility based neonatology in India and SE Asia. He is particularly known for his learning package for neonatal nursing that has been taken to scale in the three states of Gujarat, West Bengal and Karnataka.
He conceptualised teaching aids for Newborn Health in 2010, accessible on www.newbornwhocc.org. His learning package for premature baby care and implementation of the LaQshya programme with MOH is highly regarded.
Leading WHO CC at AIIMS, he steered development of online e-learning platform on Newborn Health for professionals on Moodle learning management system (LMS) www.ontop-in.org
In a first for Asia, he helped create innovative Apps on smartphones for Helping Babies Survive, in partnership with American Academy of Paediatrics.
He assisted GOI and UNICEF in operationalisation of Newborn Care; was consultant with WHO/UNDP /UNICEF in establishing facility based newborn care; helped Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Iran and Mauritius in operationalisation of CPAP and Neonatal Ventilation services; steered initiatives for Ayushmann Bharat www.pocqi.org
He is Chairman, UG curriculum at AIIMS, New Delhi; and served as Co-Director for Retinopathy of Prematurity programme for India, supported by Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, UK; and Master Trainer for Helping Babies Survive of AAP.
